Mechanics of masonry in compression: Results from a homogenisation approach
نویسنده
چکیده
Despite considerable experimental and analytical research in the past, modern regulations still adopt very conservative simplified formulas for the compressive strength of masonry. The present paper contributes to the understanding of masonry under compression, using a novel non-linear homogenisation tool that includes the possibility of tensile and compressive progressive damage, both in the unit and mortar. The simplified homogenised model uses an iterative procedure and a few ingenious micro-deformation mechanisms, being able to accurately reproduce complex simulations carried out with non-linear continuum finite element analysis, at a marginal cost of CPU time and with no convergence difficulties. In addition, the comparison of the model with experimental results available in the literature indicates that an estimation of the compressive strength of masonry better than the one provided by the codes is possible, using the mechanical and geometrical properties of the masonry components. 2006 Elsevier Ltd. Recent Advances in Masonry Modelling: Micromodelling and Homogenisation
The mechanics of masonry structures have been for long underdeveloped in comparison with other fields of knowledge, presently, non-linear analysis being a very popular field in research. Masonry is a composite material made with units and mortar, which presents a clear microstructure. The issue of mechanical data necessary for advanced non-linear analysis is addressed first, with a set of recom...
متن کاملStructural Mechanics Approach to Investigate the Hyperelastic Mechanical Behavior of Single and Multi-wall Carbon Nanotubes
In the current research, a three-dimensional finite element model was considered to predict the mechanical behavior of Single Wall (SWCNTs) and Multi Wall Carbon Nanotubes (MWCNTs). Assuming the nonlinear elastic behavior of C-C bond in large strains, hyperelastic models were considered. Literature review revealed that the material parameters of the hyperelastic models have been determined from...
متن کاملExperimental Investigation of the Damage Mechanics of Masonry under Dynamic In-plane Loads
The evolution of the damage mechanic properties for un-reinforced masonry panels under dynamic loads is critical in a time-domain analysis of masonry shear walls. This research project experimentally investigates the evolution of the properties of the damage variable for unreinforced masonry panels, subject to dynamic in-plane displacement controlled strain. This paper presents the theoretical ...
متن کاملA Study of the Progressive Degradation of Masonry Shear Walls Subjected to Harmonic Loading
This masonry research investigated the differences in the static and dynamic stiffness for the seismic range of loads and frequencies for a pressed clay masonry wythe. The effective stiffness has been defined in Newtonian physics and Damage Mechanics. This research used the concept of measured stiffness defined as the measured stress field divided by the measured strain field. A two-part test r...
متن کاملExperimental Study of Masonry Structure Under Impact Loading and Comparing it with Numerical Modeling Results via Finite Element Model Updating
Given the sophisticated nature of the blast phenomenon in relation to structures, it is of significance to accurately investigate the structure behavior under blast loads. Due to its rapid and transient nature, blast loading is one of the most important dynamic loadings on the structures. Since masonry materials are widely used as the partition and bearing walls in the existing and newly-built ...
